Facing the Depression:
A
Fascist Police State, or Economic Development?
The world these days, particularly
after September 11,
and in the face of the global economic
collapse recounted in this
issue's lead article is a rather terrifying
place. If you are a bit
older, say, middle-aged or more,
think back to "the way things
used to be", and ask yourself
"What went wrong?", "How did
this happen to us?"
The answer is: You did it. Yes,
that's right: You did it. How? By
"minding my own business",
and therefore allowing the affairs
of our nation, and of the
world, to go to Hell.
All populists, as well as others
seeking to evade responsibility,
will always denounce "the politicians",
or anyone else "in authority",
for the evils which befall
them. The reality is, as the
great Classical tragedies of
Shakespeare and Friedrich
Schiller make clear, that the problem
is never the leaders of the
population, but the population
itself, which chooses such leaders.
The "leaders", with the rare
exceptions that from time to time
have pulled mankind up out of
the mud, reflect nothing so precisely,
as the prejudices of those
who have selected them. Take
economic rationalism, which
most Australians would admit is
destroying this country. What is
it based upon, except "me, myself,
and mine"—a complete abnegation
of the common good?
Yet, if you have been "minding
my own business" during the
past two decades of economic rationalism,
keeping your "head
down, and tail up", how is your
thinking really any different
from those who plundered this
nation?
