'Kill-them' Thomson no show; CEC dominates population forum

The Western Sydney Conservation Alliance (WSCA) held a Population Forum at a St Mary's Band Club on Sunday 30th May. The WSCA announced that while Dick Smith would speak by video hook-up, Wills MP Kelvin Thomson and Mark O'Connor (Australian poet, literary scholar, and environmentalist) would be at the event, and Tony Burke the Population Minister might attend. It turned out that Chris Spike (a musical composer who promotes sounds of nature) and O'Connor were there, but neither Thomson nor Burke attended. There was no explanation as to why Thomson did not attend. The M.C. read out part of a speech that Thomson delivered six months ago, read Thomson's 14 points for population policy, and told the audience that Thomson had studied Arts and Law at Melbourne University with honours, and what an educated and knowledgeable man Thomson is.

Three CEC organisers were out the front of the building before the event, with signs, handing out the CEC "depopulation conspiracy" flyer along with the latest New Citizen. The signs were "UK Health Denial of Care Comes to Australia", the new New Citizen poster and the Fabian poster. More than 70% took a flyer including an elderly lady and man who were involved in organising the event. Later, people from inside the event came out to ask for more flyers, perhaps because the big wigs wanted copies. There were three more CEC organisers on the inner door just outside the room where the event was to be held. It was reported that most of those who had taken a flyer at the first (external) door handed them back to the CEC organisers at the inner door saying that they weren't interested. This indicates that it was a largely a "stacked" audience of depopulation devotees.

The vice president of the WSCA had a long debate with three organisers before the event and barred them from entering the function. He was later overruled when a fourth CEC organiser in the audience complained to the M.C. that his colleagues had not been allowed in.

He was right to be worried. The three activists were planning to intervene during Kelvin Thomson’s presentation. When it became clear that Thomson was not going to attend, they intervened straight away as soon as question time began. The intervention involved the holding up of a banner (2m long by 1.1m wide, the banner read, "Kelvin 'Mr Kurtz' Thomson, the Fabian Fuehrer exorts: 'exterminate the brutes!'") and singing the following canon (using the "Al Gore is a Hedge Fund whore" melody):

Kelvin Thomson's a Fabian whore who peddles green fraud eco garbage!

He's just a dirty genocidalist. Killing Aussies ain't for me; it is not for me.

As they were ushered out of the building, the cry "Join LaRouche! Bring in LaRouche!" rang out across the audience. Finally someone grabbed the banner and violently screwed it up, and they were ejected.

Two other CEC activists however, were still in the audience. John Jamieson asked a question and interacted with the presenter during the Q & A session. John said if you look at history how can you say overpopulation is the cause of all these problems when the same problems, like poverty, existed when populations were small? Chris Spike admitted John had a point, but that he was drawing a long bow if he concludes that population issues can thus be ignored. He raved that beyond certain population limits we enter into an area of the unknown, and spoke of projections of energy, water, falling food production, etc, but also a breakdown of civil society "which is to my mind very scary".

John interjected that human creativity has solved these issues before, why not again? It's obviously happened before, but you're saying that’s not going to happen this time, that there's a limit. Spike responded: "There's a lot of optimism out there that we can solve any problem brought up by population growth. I don't share that optimism."

Our other activist, Archana Misra, then asked the perfect follow-up question which was largely brushed over: What is the difference between humans and beasts in your opinion? Mark O'Connor asked what that had to do with population issues, and she responded, "You are blaming everything on human beings. (He interjected, "Well I don't think I can blame animals...") Are you saying animals are above humans?" He talked about human population growth forcing other species into smaller fractions of what's left, and said that when we push the limits we inevitably bring about starvation. He described this as occurring in periodic phases. Putting the prospect of human problem solving down to chance, he said that sometimes food production catches up, as when new foods have been introduced, but then human populations outgrow the resources again.
