Samuelson Calls For 'Forcing Event' To Slash Medicare, Social Security

May 25, 2009 (LPAC)--In an article in the June 1 issue of Newsweek entitled "Let them go bankrupt, soon; solving Social Security and Medicare," columnist Robert J. Samuelson says that recent reports that Social Security and Medicare face insolvency sooner than previously anticipated is "good news. Better would have been Social Security, Medicare risk bankruptcy in 2010." Ignoring the fact that neither is bankrupt and that both programs can easily be funded through increasing employment rather than bailing out a bankrupt monetary system, Samuelson plays directly into the current fascist drive of the Obama administration to pay for the bailout by undermining the General Welfare of the population.

Samuelson claims that Congress and the President will only deal with what he cynically calls the "political stink bomb of an aging society," if forced to do so. "And the most plausible means of compulsion would be for Social Security and Medicare to go bankrupt: trust funds run dry; promised benefits exceed dedicated payroll taxes. The sooner this happens, the better."
