May/June 2009 New Citizen:
Isherwood launches street campaign for Homeowners and Bank Protection Bill

Citizens Electoral Council leader Craig Isherwood today announced a new street campaign to press for the passage of the Homeowners and Bank Protection Bill (HBPB), coinciding with the publication of the CEC’s latest New Citizen newspaper, and the imminent release of its new DVD documentary, “The Homeowners and Bank Protection Bill—The Only Solution.”

Mr Isherwood described the street campaign as the next phase in the CEC’s ongoing mobilisation to save families from eviction, and reorganise the bankrupt banking system.

“Whoever you are, if you are worried about the economy, get involved in our campaign,” he urged.

“Families, pensioners, self-funded retirees, the unemployed and everyone else who’s been hit hard by the economic collapse do not need to feel powerless—they all need to get involved in implementing the solution.”

And the HBPB is the solution, the CEC founder insisted; the legislation will:

  • Immediately freeze any more home foreclosures;
  • Readjust mortgage payments down to what mortgagers can afford—maximum 20-25% of income;
  • Put Australia’s banks into bankruptcy protection (administration) to reorganise them, instead of propping them up with public funds:
    • Readjust their mortgage values down, to reflect realistic values of the properties;
    • Realistically appraise their bad debts to write them off;
    • Cancel their combined $14.2 trillion derivatives obligations.

“The HBPB’s bankruptcy reorganisation measures are the only way to clean up our financial system, so we can use it to finance an economic recovery,” Mr Isherwood said.

“But, as [HBPB author] Lyndon LaRouche pointed out about Barack Obama, the traditional political class has failed the people in this crisis, standing by as government policy has been hijacked to bail out the banks which caused it.

“Therefore, if we are to fix the economy, a new leadership must emerge from among the lower 80 per cent income demographic—the people on the street—to demand our governments return to protectionist, regulatory economic policies which guarantee the common good for all.”
