Isherwood: Tremonti’s right—LaRouche authored
“New Bretton Woods”

Citizens Electoral Council National Secretary Craig Isherwood today called attention to Italian Finance Minister and Treasurer Giulio Tremonti’s acknowledgement that American economist Lyndon LaRouche is the intellectual author of the “New Bretton Woods” proposal for international financial reorganisation, now on the lips of political leaders worldwide.

“Tremonti is an example for Australia’s incompetent political leadership, Rudd, Swan and Turnbull,” Mr Isherwood said, “that if you truly care about your national economic survival, then it is time to go publicly with Lyndon LaRouche’s New Bretton Woods. Not some phony baloney ‘New Britain Woods’ like Gordon Brown is pushing, to bail out the banks worldwide, but the real deal—LaRouche’s.”

Italy’s newspaper of record, Corriere della Sera, carried a long article on October 20, entitled “LaRouche and Tremonti’s Bretton Woods II”, in which Tremonti, himself an advocate of a New Bretton Woods, cited LaRouche’s authorship and praised his proposals.

“At the last Council of the EU heads of state and government in Brussels, acting chairman Nicolas Sarkozy proudly announced that the 27 member states had reached a consensus on his proposal for calling a ‘new Bretton Woods’,” Corriere reported, “preferably in November in New York, to reform capitalism, revive the world economy, and eliminate deformities, from speculative finance to tax havens. Shortly thereafter,” the article continued, “Economics Minister Giulio Tremonti, who, for some time, has characterised financial speculation as ‘the plague of the century’ and has announced anti-marketist policies aligned with Sarkozy’s, claimed that the idea of a global meeting like the one in 1944 ... was his.”

He was the first government official to do so, Tremonti clarified, but said “that he was well aware that the idea had been pushed for many years by the American guru-politician Lyndon LaRouche, a historical enemy of financial speculation and deregulated free-marketism. The Economics Minister pointed out that he participated in a discussion with LaRouche in 2007 at a conference entitled ‘Marketism or New Deal’, organised in Rome...

“Tremonti said that he thinks highly of LaRouche’s writings.” Furthermore, the paper reported, other Italian party leaders were also championing LaRouche’s proposal.

“Lega Nord Euro-MP Mario Borghezio has invited LaRouche to speak at the European Parliament. Oskar Peterlini (SVP) and many other senators from the Democratic Party and the UDC have asked the Berlusconi government to deal with the financial crisis by using the draft legislation circulated in the US by LaRouche before the summer, when he announced that the banking collapse due to subprime mortgages was imminent.

“LaRouche ... believes that the state should conduct bank rescues by putting them under a bankruptcy reorganisation procedure. Public money should save only the commercial part, necessary to finance productive activities. Delinquent mortgage loans should be put into a public fund (renegotiating a fair rate with homeowners). A ‘firewall’ should prevent state aid from being diverted by banks to funds and other speculative activities, which should be allowed to fail in order to clean out the financial markets.”

The LaRouche Youth Movement and the CEC have extensively circulated LaRouche’s draft legislation for a Homeowners and Bank Protection Bill in the Australian Parliament, Isherwood emphasised. “But Rudd and Turnbull are running a terror campaign to stop anyone introducing it. Therefore the Australian people are going to pay the price in soaring foreclosures, job losses, and soon enough, bank collapses and misery here in Australia far worse than anything seen in the Great Depression.”
