Hell Hits Detroit: LaRouche Plan Now!

October 12, 2009 (LPAC)—Last week for two days, Cobo Hall in downtown Detroit was a scene from the descent into the New Dark Age. The city had announced the distribution of a limited number of applications for a limited amount of federally funded assistance to help needy families pay mortgage, rent, utility bills, or just buy food. There was enough money to provide assistance to approximately 3,500 families. Some 60,000 people showed up over the two days, creating a mob scene, with a number of people nearly trampled and others collapsing under the pressure. Police had to be called in to manage the crowds, and medics were called in to treat the wounded.

At the same time, the City of Detroit is wrestling with a $300 million deficit and the newly elected Mayor Bing is engaged in negotiations to sell off city-owned assets, cut spending across the board, and get city unions to accept deep wage and benefit cuts. And this is on top of a 25-year-plus process of economic disintegration typified by the collapse of the population from a high of nearly 2 million in the 1950s to close to 800,000 today.

On top of that, the Detroit public school system is also facing a $300 million deficit, and the school board and teachers' union and other interested parties are engaged in yet another round of screaming matches over wage cuts, school closings, and other drastic austerity measures.

Meanwhile, Detroit City Council members are being indicted or investigated for various alleged corruption scandals. The former state-appointed City Manager-in-bankruptcy for Highland Park, a city within the city of Detroit, is on trial for embezzlement during his tenure. And none other than His Honor, former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, is back in the news, charged this time with violating the terms of his probation by falsifying reports of his current income and failing to meet his restitution obligations to the city, while living lavishly in a million-dollar mansion in Texas.

And Gov. Jennifer Granholm, the legislature, the Democratic and Republican leaderships, the news media, and the business community are all scrambling to be at the top of the heap in promoting the Green Techology solution for saving the economy.
