Results of Obama Healthcare Policy: 60,000 Deprived of Health Coverage So Far

July 16, 2009 (LPAC)—Is President Barack Obama really a corporate "vulture capitalist" — the kind who takes over a firm and dumps employee and retiree health insurance? These are the results of his healthcare "reforms" so far.

On July 14, a half-page ad was taken in the Washington Post and Detroit Free Press, which was embarrassing for Obama's visit to Macomb County, Michigan that day, and in the midst of his whipping the Congressional Democrats to ram through his fascist healthcare "reform."

The ad was published on behalf of the 50,000 people Obama and Treasury Secretary Geithner have suddenly deprived of their health insurance. They are retirees from GM plants who were represented by unions other than the United Autoworkers (the IUE-CWA, IBEW, Steelworkers, and Operating Engineers). In the White House bankruptcy plan for GM, these retirees lost nearly all (87%) of their union health benefits — leaving some of them with Medicare, but most with nothing. In the bankruptcy process, Treasury decided it was "not commercially necessary" for GM to honor its contractual benefits for the retirees.

Obama and Geithner apparently learned their takeover/bankruptcy technique from corporate raider Wilbur Ross (who dispensed with Bethlehem Steel's contractural retiree health benefits), and from synarchist banker Felix Rohatyn (who trained Obama's "car czar" Ron Bloom). The action on GM makes a mockery of the President's healthcare mantra, "If you like the coverage you have, I promise you, you get to keep it."

Meanwhile, the Massachusetts healthcare "universal mandate" plan which is one of Obama's "reform" models, is falling apart fiscally and becoming less "universal"; the state has decided that legal residents, documented immigrants with green cards, no longer have to be covered in their employer's plans.

So far, then, the score for Obama's plan to "expand" health insurance, is that approximately 60,000 Americans have lost the coverage they had, and none have gained it.
