Sen. Mark Warner Greases the Skids to Kill the Elderly

June 30, 2009 (LPAC)—Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), in an op-ed on Sunday in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, boasted that he has introduced a bill to pressure every American family to opt for palliative care for seniors and the critically ill, and specify that decision ahead of time by making a living will.

Warner calls his Nazi-modelled bill the Senior Navigation and Planning Act of 2009 (S.1263). It would put the elderly and their families through meetings with ghoul squads, who will pressure them to sign an agreement for only palliative care. Warner says his bill includes incentives for doctors, hospitals, and nursing homes to incorporate palliative care programs into their discharge planning.

Like Obama, Warner wants to follow the Nazi model, but not be called a Nazi: "Let me be clear: This legislation does not in any way deny or limit health-care services." However, a bit down the page, Warner says, "Currently, we leave it to families to resolve these extraordinarily difficult decisions, often in moments of crisis, with little guidance. Is it any wonder then that, by some estimates, up to a third of Medicare costs occur in the final 12 months of life?"

When Obama went to Green Bay, Wisconsin, for his June 11 Town Hall meeting, he praised Green Bay for spending $33,334 in the final two years of a patient's life, versus the average $46,412 spent per patient nationwide. Jeffrey Thomspon, CEO of Gunderson Lutheran Health System in LaCrosse, Wisc., which has a similar spending pattern, explained that it achieves this cost-efficiency by pressuring patients to sign medical directives that allow their lives to be ended.

Warner's bill has been endorsed by AARP, the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (more business!) and Duke University Divinity School. There are no Senate co-sponsors at present.
