Are The Age editors liars, or just plain stupid?

The editorial of Sunday 5 June’s The Age, a Fairfax Media publication, equates the Citizens Electoral Council with the anti-immigration, anti-Islam groups of the so-called “far right”. The authors accuse the CEC, lumped in with the Australian Liberty Alliance and the Rise Up Australia Party, of having a “platform built on petty prejudice … masked by an innocuous sounding party name”, and of “targeting minorities”, most recently Muslims, “in an attempt to deflect blame for a host of otherwise complex economic and social problems”.

In fact, for nearly three decades the CEC has called upon Australians to welcome migrants and refugees of all faiths and nationalities—first because of our moral obligation as human beings to help our fellow man in need; and also because of the enormous cultural and economic contributions that migrant communities have made, and continue to make, to Australian society. The CEC issued its most recent such call only days before The Age’s ignorant outburst, in a 31 May media release denouncing Immigration Minister Peter Dutton’s hate-mongering anti-refugee tirade and the glacial pace of Australia’s promised resettlement of 12,000 Syrian refugees. CEC leader Craig Isherwood stated therein that “The CEC has always had a policy of welcoming refugees to make a better life for themselves, and to help us build Australia, as we did post-World War II and as the Fraser government did after the Vietnam War”, and advocated “a much more generous immigration intake.”

That media release was sent to hundreds of thousands of people nationwide, including to reporters and media outlets, and is displayed on the front page of the CEC’s website, making it difficult to fathom how The Age’s editors reached the conclusion that they did. Two possibilities exist: they did no research or fact-checking of their own, preferring to repeat a tired old slander; or else they acted with deliberate intent to smear the CEC, and the truth be damned. If the latter, why? Is Fairfax complicit in the global cover-up of the British-Saudi sponsorship of terrorism and war—which drives people from their homelands and makes them refugees—that the CEC has repeatedly and uniquely exposed?
