There’s only one hope for economic recovery: build infrastructure

Now that the epicentre of the eurozone crisis has shifted from Greece to Spain, the meltdown is proceeding faster than any possible bailout. All of the delicately-balanced financial bailout deals struck worldwide since 2008 are set to collapse, including those that propped up the Australian banking system. On top of Australia’s massive foreign debt burden, we are also exposed to the crisis through the total dependence of our mining-based economy upon China, which is shaking from the economic shockwaves emanating from Europe.

There is only one hope for Australia’s future. We can and must return to the commitment to economic development that built Australia, before that commitment was shredded by the free market lies of Hawke, Keating, Howard, and Hewson. The CEC has a blueprint for economic development, entitled The Infrastructure Road to Recovery. It details: 18 large-scale water diversion projects to drought-proof Australia, control floods and boost food production; major railway projects based on maglev technology; nuclear power and water desalination; high-speed shipping; and space exploration. These projects will create hundreds of thousands of jobs, and can all be funded through public credit issued by a national bank, in the same way we built the Transcontinental Railway in 1912, financed the war mobilisation of WWII, built the Snowy Mountains Scheme, and developed advanced heavy industries such as aluminium smelting in the 1970s and 1980s.
