Isherwood: Act to save food bowl from man-made flood disaster

Citizens Electoral Council leader Craig Isherwood today called for a Tennessee Valley Authority-style integrated infrastructure program in the Murray-Darling Basin to tame floods such as those that are presently destroying precious food production and inundating its towns.

Isherwood also accused the current federal and state authorities of sabotaging the region’s ability to defend itself from flood disasters, by forcing locals to comply with green policies that are designed to force them out.

“Australia’s food bowl is being devastated by floods, but the catastrophe is man-made,” he declared.

“In some places infrastructure that should have been built, has not been. In other places, excellent infrastructure that is already in place—including parts of the impressive irrigation infrastructure developed in conjunction with the Snowy Mountains Scheme—has been allowed to run down and deteriorate for lack of maintenance. This systemic neglect is the cause of the infrastructure failures that have led to flood waters badly damaging farms and towns that were already under siege by the Murray-Darling Basin Authority’s Plan to clear them out of the food bowl.”

Isherwood cited as examples:

  • Residents of St George in Queensland last year scrambled to build a temporary levee to protect their town against that flood, and a year later had to rely on the same levee to protect the town again, as no permanent infrastructure had been built.
  • Crops in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area were destroyed because gates in irrigation canals that were designed to also mitigate floods have been poorly maintained, and didn’t open. In one case the town of Yenda was inundated because of a failed gate. Isherwood asked, “Why weren’t the gates maintained? Surely the relevant authorities didn’t believe climate change soothsayer Tim Flannery when he said it wouldn’t rain again, did they?”
  • Renmark in South Australia’s Riverland desperately needs its levees repaired, but neither the state nor federal government is prepared to fund it. Outrageously, the state Minister for the River Murray, Paul Caica, has cynically panned local concerns about the present flood waters that are moving down the river toward Renmark as a “fear campaign” to “leverage” funds.
  • In stark contrast to farmers having to face floods, the Murray-Darling Basin Authority doesn’t acknowledge they even exist. They refuse to include the last two years in their calculations of average water inflows and outflows in the Basin, but stop at 2009, the final year of the ten-year drought. The last two years have been the wettest in recorded history, and would push the average up, which would force the MDBA to allow irrigators to keep more water. The MDBA is not even prepared to give this relatively small concession to farmers.

Isherwood said it was effectively government policy to expose rural communities to flooding.

“The British Crown’s green fascism has taken hold of Australia from top to bottom,” he said. “Instead of doing everything in their power to protect communities by developing bigger and better infrastructure, the various governments are instead committed to restoring floodplains and swamps.

“They are sacrificing rural communities to green schemes that are based entirely on a scientific fraud: the ‘ecosystem’ myth, which the CEC thoroughly demolished in our recent DVD Ecosystems: A Genocidal Fraud.”

Immediate measures must be taken to alleviate and reverse the damage that government policies have inflicted upon the rural farms and towns, Isherwood said.

“Today I am calling for an immediate debt moratorium for family farms and local businesses,” he said. “As the CEC has warned constantly for the last few years, we know the banks are circling the basin like sharks, looking for any reason to foreclose. The best immediate relief that the government can provide to local communities is to keep the banks at bay.

“I am also calling for massive investment in an integrated infrastructure development program that can both drought-proof the Murray-Darling Basin, and tame its floods. An excellent model for the MDB is the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in the United States, which the Franklin Roosevelt administration developed during the Great Depression. The TVA controlled flooding, stopped soil erosion, and generated hydroelectricity. The visionaries who developed the Snowy Mountains Scheme and the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area took their inspiration from the TVA, but it must now be applied to the whole Murray-Darling Basin, from Queensland to South Australia.

“We must build new dams, canals, and weirs. We must build the Clarence River Scheme as proposed by Professor Lance Endersbee, and the Bradfield Scheme in north Queensland. We must commit to building whatever infrastructure is required to give the farmers and communities of the Basin the best conditions possible to reliably grow food to feed Australia and the world.”

The CEC leader concluded, “I am committed to destroying the green idea that there are too many people, that the human population must be reduced, which is driving government policy. This is all coming from the British Crown, which invented today’s green fascism precisely in order to murder billions of human beings, including millions of Australians. Join us to help defeat the Crown’s green fascist plot.”
