New York Public Prosecutor Ferdinand Pecora who led the Pecora Commission

The 1933-34 Pecora hearings investigated the causes of the 1929 financial crash. FDR used the hearings to break the control of Wall Street over the U.S. government and as leverage to push through bankruptcy reorganisation and economic reforms. Leading bankers, like J.P. Morgan Jnr were exposed for their crimes and thrown in jail.

In his 1939 book, Wall Street Under Oath: What Have We Learned? Ferdinand Pecora (pictured) wrote: "The power of J.P. Morgan was not a very strong popular delusion, as Mr Lamont would have it, but a stark fact. The problems raised by such an institution go far beyond banking regulation in the narrow sense. It might be a formidable rival to the government itself."
