Cyprus Demonstrators Denounce the "New Colonialism"
May 2, 2013 • 9:32AM

While the government of Cyprus narrowly passed the brutal Eurozone memorandum and loan agreement two days ago, thousands of demonstrators in front of the Parliament denounced it and vowed to fight the new form of colonialism. "We know where this policy will take us. It will damage labor relations and will annihilate the meaning of democracy," Nicos Trimikliniotis, who is part of an anti-austerity and anti-privatizations platform, told the Cyprus Mail.

Demonstrators represented several organizations from the full spectrum of Cypriot politics, from the left-wing Citizen's Alliance to the right-wing nationalist groups. People chanted, "Troika Out of Cyprus!" "Cyprus Will Not Become a Protectorate!" or "People, Wake Up, Stand Up! They Are Drinking Your Blood!" "As the youth, we want a future in Cyprus and not to be forced to emigrate," said Antonis Kazamias, a 26-year-old student. "We disagree with the Memorandum and its policy."

The former ruling AKEL reiterated its proposal for an exit from the Eurozone and a referendum. "We think it destroys the banking sector, to a large extent it destroys the Cypriot economy, and it leads to a vicious circle that will continuously breed new needs and demands for fresh harsh measures," AKEL leader Andros Kyprianou said. "We know leaving the euro is an equally painful option, but reinstating a national currency could offer prospects for growth in the future."

The collapse of the economy is in full swing with the European statistical agency Eurostat reporting unemployment figures for March increasing to 14.2%, up from 10.7% year on year, the highest rate of increase in Europe. Cyprus is followed by Greece (27.2% in January), Spain (26.7%) and Portugal (17.5%).
