Where Did You Hear it First? Mussolini Was a British Agent!

October 15, 2009 (LPAC)—A British historian has found receipts of MI5 checks to Mussolini in 1917, to finance Musso's campaign to keep Italy in World War I on the side of Britain. The story is big in the British media, less so in the Italian media. "Mussolini's payments were authorized by Sir Samuel Hoare, an MP and MI5's man in Rome, who ran a staff of 100 British intelligence officers in Italy at the time," the Guardian writes. "Hoare, later to become Lord Templewood, mentioned the recruitment in memoirs in 1954," but historian Peter Martland stumbled on details of the payments for the first time while scouring Hoare's papers.

Payments were kept for at least a year, equivalent to about £6,000 a week today.

Hoare was a member of the pro-Nazi Cliveden Set. He became Foreign Secretary, then Interior Minister under Churchill. As ambassador to Spain, he played a role in negotiating Franco's staying out of the war.

In 1935, as Foreign Secretary, Hoare signed the Hoare-Laval Pact which gave Mussolini control over Abyssinia.
