Swine Flu's Direct Mortality Rate is a Hundred Times Worse than Seasonal Flu

August 27, 2009 (LPAC)— In a bombshell interview, breaking with all the nonsense saying the swine flu pandemic is hardly any worse than the normal seasonal flu, the French flu expert and head of the French National Public Health School Alain Flahault, declared in an interview to Le Monde that the rate of direct mortality of H1N1 influenza is a hundred (x100) times higher than usual seasonal flu. The explanation sheds light on the surprising high rate of rapid deaths observed in young adults.

In reality, says Flahault, estimates about the exact mortality rate of swine flu are hard to establish since the virus can provoke death in three different ways. First, in a way which nearly is nonexistent in developed countries: by (bacterial) over-infection. Second, by way of a viral lung infection provoking an acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) leading to death in 50% to 60% of cases. In this situation of direct mortality, it is the virus which kills (not its complications). The third cause of mortality comes from the sharp worsening of pre-existing chronic infections.

The finding results from the initial surveys done in New Caledonia and Mauritius in the southern hemisphere, where data show that the direct mortality rate is one out of 10,000 infections, certainly very rare, but nevertheless one hundred times higher than the rate of seasonal influenza.
