U.S. Center for Disease Control Acknowledges 1 Million U.S. Flu Cases, and no Let-Up June 27, 2009—The Centers for Disease Control acknowledged yesterday that an estimated 1 million Americans have been infected with the H1N1 swine flu. And more ominously, CDC researcher Lyn Finelli noted in a presentation yesterday that "so far it doesn't look like transmission is declining at all."
Finelli's comment lends credence to earlier warnings by international experts of an abnormal pattern to this flu pandemic. A normal, seasonal flu would have long since receded. The expectation among a growing number of experts is that the number of flu infections will explode during the Autumn flu season. If the virus undergoes a change to a more deadly form, a possibility which becomes more likely as time goes on, the casualties could run into the millions. Even without a change to a more deadly form, U.S. casualties could easily reach into the hundreds of thousands.
